Stanton papers include general officer's papers consisting mainly of a scrapbook of clippings and papers on his military career (1861-1899), his retirement, and his death in 1900. Many focus on his service in the Indian Wars, especially the Sioux War of 1876-1877, as the "Fighting Paymaster" and Chief of Scouts. Diary with brief, intermittent entries in 1874.

Thaddeus H. Stanton was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. Major Frank North and Captain Luther North were, during 1870s, assigned to Company A, Nebraska Volunteers, of the United States Army which was made up of Pawnee Indians, and were deployed in Nebraska and Wyoming. James Henry Lane (1814-1866) was a noted military and political leader of Kansas. He was active in his home state of Indiana, serving as a military commander in the Mexican War (1841) and later as Indiana's Lieutenant Governor from 1849-1853.
